Volunteering has been part of my life for decades. Food banks, childcare, political... I've done quite a bit. Volunteering is so personally rewarding to me. Now that I'm traveling abroad for a few years I'm going to sign up to do some international volunteering. I urge you to consider this as well, whether it's just you or your whole family, there are volunteering options available. There are even some volunteering trips that provide free housing. When traveling it doesn't have to be just about what we get from the places we visit, it can be about giving back to them, too. I've listed some examples below.
Experience the sailing life in one of the world's best spots for Watersports. Be part of an international crew on board. Gain experience in Marine Research in the field (Underwater). Get your hands on some of the fancy research gear such as Plankton nets and Hydrophones. Get close up to dolphins and whales in the wild.

As type O negative (the universal donor), I understand the importance of blood donation. And trust me, all countries need this precious life force. All blood collected through The Red Cross, in the US and abroad, goes through rigorous testing. One blood donation can save as many as three lives. Sustainable and quality blood services play a critical role in the health of a society and in preparing for, and responding to, disasters. Blood can be used for lots of different life-saving purposes, including assisting patients undergoing surgery, treating diseases such as anemia and malaria, caring for patients on chemotherapy, and supporting women with complications during childbirth. If you care about your fellow man, blood donation is a moral imperative, in my humble opinion.
Full disclosure: I have not personally worked in a volunteer program that provides accommodations. However, I've done some research and found WorldPackers.com to be a reputable organization allowing volunteers to travel, collaborate and make a difference. I've listed some of their programs (with varying degrees of what is required of and provided to the volunteer). My niece has volunteered at a Surf Camp in Costa Rica doing social media content and coral reef cleanup in the Dominican Republic and thoroughly enjoyed the experiences.
